Background: Courage

Courage was written by Joey already back in 1986 but not released until ten years later on the 1996 album "Louder Than Hell". The song has also been released in French.

The song is heavily influenced by the classical piece "Canon in D major" written by Johann Pachelbel around 1680.

Here's a version of it on Youtube. Notice as the song follows the same chord progression as "Courage". It's most notable in the beginning.

Is it just a coincidence or does it just show Joey's passion and inspiration from classical music? Anyways, both the original and Courage is wonderful pieces of music.

Here's a couple of other bands that have based their songs on this classical piece.

Eric Adams & Sarah Brightman's "Where Eagles Fly" also follows the same chord progression.

Background: Achilles, Agony & Ecstasy (in eight parts)

On the 1992 album "The Triumph of Steel", there's a song called "Achilles, Agony & Ecstasy (in eight parts)" which is almost 30 minutes long. The song is the story of the Greek epic poem called The Iliad.

If you're interested to read more about it, there's a good article here.

This is a very interesting article which analyzes the lyrics of the MANOWAR song. A must if you're interested in the story.

Interview with Joey DeMaio and Ross The Boss by SOUNDS USA, June 1987

Interview with Joey DeMaio / Ross The Boss
Published by : SOUNDS USA
Interviewer : Roy Wilkinson / Fin Costello
Published on : June 1987

Thanks to Udo Sapper for providing the interview.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I Ate Ross the Boss’s tuna fish sandwich

Honest headbangers MANOWAR prepare to do battle with the hordes of False Metal. ROY WILKINSON crosses swords and mixes sorcery with ROSS THE BOSS and JOEY DeMAIO. Snarls 'n' studs FIN COSTELLO

A vast thee varlets and take heed as you enter the domain of Manowar. The story so far: having forsaken their native land of Amerika, the four strong SAS (Sword And Sorcery) unit known as Manowar have embarked on a European axe assault (promotional concert tour). After conspicuous victory in Gaul and Germania this happy band of brothers have landed in Britain to do battle in the hostile Netherlands, which those who dare to speak their name call The Odeons. Before implementing this plan (with much stagecraft and ampage), Commander of The Guitars, Ross The Boss, and Field Marshall-Stack, Joey DeMaio, have set up temporary court in the hit fertile valleys of WEA Recordsoria.

It is there that we meet with He-Manowar Ross to hear his plans for the future and drink and eat heartily as he regales us with tales from his illustrious past. Manowar's Kingdom is a vicious one where speakers blow, drums of doom sound and guitars wail loudly (according to The Guinness Book Of Records, Manowar are the loudest band ever!). But in the fearsome lands of Heavy Metalia and Recording Industria, Manowar have many sworn enemies. The most insidious of these are the loosely aligned forces of False Metal who Manowar attack unequivocally on the sleeve of their current single 'Blow Your Speakers'.

"He who refuses to take part in modern mediocrity will forever stand alone, an outcast. He is the bringer of change, changes that instil fear in all who go with fashion's flow. Their power comes from others, not from within. They are false! Woe unto them for the bringers of change have banded together. The time is now! We cannot be stopped! We are riding up, riding on the will of the people. The battle rages - choose your side. DEATH TO FALSE METAL."
SO WHO are these people, where do they come from and why do they wear spandex trousers? Ross has the answers.

"False Metal is the musicians who are in it for all the wrong things - ego, money, girls, partying. All the stuff that really has nothing to do with it."

Surely not! Aren't these values at the very Gibson impaled heart of HM. Whatever, it seems that this blight is in no way restricted to any heavy metal sub genre.

“It’s not a type of music, it’s just individuals. In blues they call it shucking and jiving. I think it’s just.. I dunno, it’s just false. It’s just a phrase we started a long time ago and it’s sort of stuck. The phrase meant more back then than it does now."

Ross doesn't want to name names but he is prepared to indicate the antithesis of False Metal by giving some bands the Manowar seal of approval.

"The thrash bands - Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer - they're pretty hot at the moment but there are a lot of things, like that band Europe who do some things that I like (!) I’m not crazy about them, I’m not crazy about any of the bands about at the moment. To be honest with you, the older English bands are the ones I like: Queen, Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin”

This metal miscellany can only provide the barest of guidelines to the realm of True Metal. Surely the best description of this hones headbanging will come with Manowar’s new album, the ominously titled “Fighting The World”. It’s an album streaked with “Violence and Bloodshed”, where Ross and Co declare a “holy War” on all metal’s opponents and where the track “Carry On” plays into the hands of Manowar mockers. In the light of that song will be all too easy to subtitle 'Fighting The World’ as Carry On Metal - Spinal Tap Go Wild 10,000 BC. But if you do then you will be sadly misguided for Manowar do not play Carry On Caveman offstage, as Ross explains when I ask him if the band live the designer Ancient Briton part in their spare time.

"Killl or be killed, hunt or be hunted, that kind of thing. Naaah, that’s definitely from the past, not very modern... you couldn't classify us as warriors or Vikings or cavemen... it’s just a tough image. I mean, I don't want to be known as a Viking or a barbarian, Gawd no! All we are is the hard, warrior type of guy; we play our music and if people don't like it then they can f*** off."
Up alongside the Hammer House Of Horror sound effects and he 4, 8 string and piccolo bass runs on 'Fighting The World’ comes a magnificent voice adding its backing to the Manowar clarion call. Orson Welles, who before his death was substantial Manowar fan, narrates the intro to 'Defender’ Surely working with a figure as legendary as Welles must have be awesome even for Manowar. Ross agrees.

“Hey, I’ll tell you how awesome he was – he was so awesome that we had to bring him up in the freight lift. (Pause of laughter.) Back in 1982 we were thinking of people to do a voice over for ‘Dark Avenger’. Someone suggest Orson so we sent him our music and lyrics and he really liked it - he said Manowar were like soldiers on the battlefield of life. At the time we also got him to do some stuff on 'Defender' and we've just put that out on the new album. It’s amazing that Hollywood didn't want him. He had to come over here (Britain) and do commercials. They wanted Star Wars and he just wanted brilliance, Citizen Kane. Stuff like that. Sort of like us."

Together with this rather unsuspected inclusion on ‘Fighting The World’, Manowar have had some pretty strange credits on previous albums. On 'Hail To England' they credit the Manowar Medical staff. I ask Ross if this is because the band often cut themselves during a bit of sword practice. "Naaah. We work with doctors - they examine the band and we just like to credit them.

It’s not like we're at the doctors all the time because we're full of sexual diseases..."
WELL, MANOWAR interview over it’s time to go and let this amiable, small but perfectly formed New Yorker get on with his lunch. But before I can get up, Ross insists on sharing his meal with me. Expecting hunks of red meat, I’m mildly taken aback when he reveals some tasty looking tuna fish sandwiches. I bid him a fond farewell, take one and the rest, as they say, is legend.

Most played song the last weeks...

is Hail to England. What a fantastic song. I've learned to play it on my guitar too.

This clip is from Magic Circle Festival this year. It was the highlight for me on the first night.

I'm looking forward to the new DVD

Although I'm still a bit disappointed of the last newsflash MANOWAR gave about the coming Magic Circle Festival DVD which said ".. nearly two hours live highlights." Two hours when they played six albums? I was hoping for the full show on both nights - because they were that good that they deserve a DVD of their own.

Let's hope they have put all those songs that haven't been played in a while on the DVD, and not another release of Kill with Power for example. The ones I look forward to mostly is Hail to England, Kingdom Come and Warriors of the World United was amazing on the last night.

The sound and quality of last years Magic Circle Festvial DVD was absolutely stunning and I'm excited to hear how it sounds now. The sound quality at the show was excellent. It was even better than when I saw them in Hamburg last year - and that was indoor!

Another highlight on the coming DVD is - RHINO!

Do you have anything to add to the site?

I want to put together some lists of interviews, tour reports, pictures, setlists, past tourdates etc both old and new ones.

If you have anything cool that you think would fit on the site, please e-mail me or write a comment here.

June 29, 2002 - Roskilde Festival - Roskilde, Denmark

I went to the Roskilde Festival and I paid a lot of money to get there and be there but when you finally are in front of the stage waiting for Manowar to turn on full-power, to get out there and blast you really don't care about such things. There can't be any more great feeling when they get out there, I nearly started to cry during the first songs since it was so great to see the band on stage again.

I woke up late on Saturday morning and by this time there was not anything called hangover since last night, because in a couple of hours I knew that Manowar was going to blow away that stage and that made me feel happy. The day started out as usual during the festival, a breakfast consisting of beer and more beer ; ).

A few hours before the show would start I left the camping to find Marjo and Theo from the Manowar-crew who were doing the merchandise this day. We had a lot of fun and I also got the opportunity to meet Hinrich Stuerken. I also met our new guy in the Worldwide Web Warriors, Olaf from Norway. We had a great time togheter and both me and Olaf agreed to be in the front-row when Manowar was going to play.

hen they started to take people in to the front-rows I managed to push myself right into the front of the stage togheter with a lot of other crazy fans. The atmosphere was great and everyone was cheering "Manowar, Manowar, Manowar" and "Hail, hail, hail and kill". I even heard someone sing Nessun Dorma. ; ). A few minutes before the show would start, the manager Tom Miller came out on stage to warm up the audience and he sure did. The air was filled with excitement and magic. You could see the crew on stage get prepared for the show and suddenly you hear the Manowar-intro. Then Scott takes his place, Joey and Karl comes in and "BAM!", they start out with "Manowar" as usual. A show like this couldn't start better with a song like this. "Manowar" is directly followed by "Blood of my Enemies" and then comes "Kill with Power". Then it's time for a new song, the single "Warriors of the World United". Scott starts to bang his drums, Joey starts with the bass and the crowd gets totally crazy! This song works very good live and was one of the songs I remember most from this evening. After the song everyone left the stage except for Karl who are doing "My spirit lives on" perfectly. Then comes a surprise, a song that I didn't expect but how I loved it! When Joey first started out with his bass-guitar I thought it would be "Gates of Valhalla" but I realized that it was "Heart of Steel"!. Eric started to sing and then the crowd were singing the rest of the lyrics, it was so awesome! After this song Eric told us about Hell on Earth pt 1, 2 3, and that they were filming this show for HOE pt 4 (!). "Heart of Steel" was followed by a bass-solo by Joey and he really got my ears to ring that evening. When Joey was done, Scott started playing on "Fighting the World". This song was directly followed by "Kings of Metal" and "Sign of the Hammer". Then everyone else except Joey left the stage and he told us a lot of both fun and serious things. He made the whole crowd go crazy and everyone was cheering "Manowar, Manowar, Manowar" again. Then it was time for the fast songs starting out with "The Power", directly followed by the new song "House of Death" which also was great to hear live. They continued with "Hail & Kill" and by this time it was like hell standing down there in the crowd, which went so fucking crazy! The show ended with "Black wind, fire and steel" and the outro "The Crown and the Ring".

This photo is from the Galaxy Studios in Belgium 2002 (where the band recorded and mixed some of the Warriors of the World stuff and later also Gods of War). It was the press-conference for the release of the album Warriors of the World. I hope to write more about this as it was a fantastic experience to meet the band. (I'm down to the right!)

About me

My name is Johan and I'm a 24 year old MANOWAR fan from Sweden. I've been a fan for the past 12 years and during 2000-2004 I made the Official Swedish Fansite for the band. I collected some material back then which I want to share with you all. I also hope to add some new material to this site and to share with you all the passion of my life; MANOWAR! Welcome and enjoy the site!

Hail and Kill!

Do you remember the header image?

It was the one I used while doing the Official Swedish Fansite. It said "OFFICIAL SWEDISH FANSITE" on the left, so I had to edit it out now when I'm no longer official. I found the image using the Internet Archive Wayback Machine. If you want to know how the site looked like, go to this site and type in "manowar.nu".

Manowar.nu

Between 2000 and 2004 I made the Official Swedish Fansite (which was a part of the World Wide Webwarriors - Manowar's Official Webring) on this domain. The site had around 100 visitors a day, and a huge number of subscribers to the newsletter. Where you one of them? Tell me!

Interviews

This is where I collect interviews with the band members. If you have an interview you'd like to add to this list, please e-mail me.
